Microsoft vs Rival OpenOffice Format: Microsoft says it will sponsor an open-source project to create tools for translating files between the OpenOffice.org's "OpenDocument" format, and Microsoft's proprietary "Office Open XML" format the company is intending to use in an upcoming version of Microsoft Office. This looks like an attempt to appease the State of Massachusetts, which is planning a move to all-open file formats for software in use by government business. This means no Microsoft Office, unless the monopoly OS/software company can offer open-format versions of their products. But are translation tools adequate to keep Microsoft's foot in the door?
