Ultra-Efficient Solar Cells on the Horizon: Lawrence Berkeley Nation Lab researchers studying LEDs -- applying electricity to materials to produce light -- have made a serendipitous discovery that could produce much more efficient materials for solar panels. Today's solar cells typically yield electricity from only about 25% of the sunlight specturm they intercept. The new materials could generate electricity from the full spectrum of sunlight, producing yields as high as 70%; and they shouldn't be expensive to produce either. Truly affordable solar power is on the horizon. [Scienceagogo via John Robb's Radio Weblog]
